Siargao is the Philippines' premier surf island, famed for the Cloud 9 barrel. Turquoise lagoons, white-sand islets and mangroves round out a stay balancing nature and waves in the Philippine Sea.

Siargao is a tear-shaped island located in Surigao del Norte province, northeast of Mindanao. Known worldwide for its surfing, it is home to Cloud 9, the global benchmark for barrel riding. Beyond the waves, the island offers lagoons, mangroves, white-sand islets and a laid-back atmosphere that draws both surfers and nature-seeking travelers alike.

Practical Information at a Glance

  • Access: Direct flights from Manila and Cebu to Francisco B. Reyes Airport (Sayak Airport), roughly 30 minutes from General Luna.
  • Local Transport: Habal-habal (motorcycle taxis), rental scooters and tricycles for short trips.
  • Recommended Duration: 4 to 7 days to combine surfing, islets and lagoons.
  • Dress Code: Swimwear and light clothing; cover up in villages and chapels.
  • Surf Season: Optimal swell August to November; dry season March to October for sea excursions.

What to See

The island concentrates several landscape types within a small area. The town of General Luna is the nerve center: restaurants, cafés, accommodations and direct access to Cloud 9. Island roads pass through dense coconut groves, rice paddies and little-visited fishing villages. The lagoons of Sugba and Sohoton, accessible by boat, showcase turquoise waters framed by karst cliffs.

History and Context

Siargao remained isolated for years, accessible only by boat from Surigao City. Surfing began attracting foreign visitors in the 1990s, following the international discovery of Cloud 9. The island was struck by Typhoon Odette (Rai) in December 2021, causing significant damage; reconstruction was swift and most tourist infrastructure has reopened.

Highlights of Your Visit

Cloud 9

This surf break produces a hollow, powerful barrel on a shallow reef. A wooden observation tower allows non-surfers to watch sessions. The break hosts the annual Siargao Cloud 9 Surfing Cup, an international competition recognized by the WSL.

Sugba Lagoon

Accessible by boat from General Luna, this protected lagoon is managed by the local community. Calm, shallow waters are ideal for swimming and paddling. Floating platforms allow diving in the lagoon.

Naked Island, Daku and Guyam Islets

These three islets can be visited on a day excursion. Naked Island is a bare sandbar with no vegetation; Daku is the largest, with coconut palms and inhabitants; Guyam is tiny, ringed by coral reef accessible with fins and snorkel.

Sohoton Lagoon and Caves

Located within Bucas Grande natural park, this karst lagoon is visited by kayak or flat-bottomed boat. Stalactite-lined caves border the lagoon; some shelter populations of non-stinging jellyfish depending on the season.

Magpupungko Rock Pools

At low tide, natural pools form in basalt rocks along the island's northeast coast. The site is accessible by scooter from General Luna and frequented late morning.

Photography Tips

The Cloud 9 tower offers a plunging angle on surfers late afternoon, when light turns golden and offshore wind sets in. For islets, depart early before tour groups arrive. Sugba Lagoon photographs best mid-morning, when the sun is high enough to illuminate the seabed. Drones require authorization in certain protected zones.

Location and Access

Siargao sits in the Philippine Sea, east of Mindanao. Sayak Airport serves the island from Manila (Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines) and Cebu. Ferries also connect Surigao City to Dapa, the island's main port. General Luna, roughly 30 km from the airport, is the starting point for most excursions. Main roads are paved; secondary tracks require a scooter or habal-habal.

Nearby

  • Surigao City — port town serving as the departure point for ferries to Siargao, featuring a bustling market and connections to Mindanao.
  • Bucas Grande — neighboring archipelago home to Sohoton Lagoon and its karst caves, accessible by boat from Siargao.
  • Dinagat Islands — island province north of Siargao, rarely visited, with secluded beaches and fishing communities.
