History
Burnham Park dates back to 1925, when it was designed as part of Daniel Burnham's vision for the development of Baguio. The park sits on the site of the former Ibaloi village of Kafagway and reflects the city's cultural heritage. Named after the renowned American architect, it serves as a central gathering place for events and festivals celebrating local history. It preserves traces of Baguio's colonial past while illustrating the city's evolution into a modern urban center.
Burnham Park, a verdant urban space
The estate offers expansive grounds dotted with pleasant pathways, pines, and meticulously maintained gardens. Its central artificial lake draws the eye and serves as the focal point of the park.
It comprises several distinct zones: to the north, a rose garden and open green space; to the south, an ice skating rink; to the east, the Melvin Jones Grand Stand and football field; to the west, the Orchidarium and children's park. Walkways and green spaces connect these various sections.
Exceptional flora
At Burnham Park, you'll discover a lush landscape featuring approximately 2,600 trees and 72 plant species, including cogon grass and mutha, both endemic to the Philippines. Herbaceous plants, shrubs, and trees from the Myrtaceae, Moraceae, and Bignoniaceae families further enrich this diverse ecosystem. Around the skating rink, the concentration of trees creates shaded areas where you can stroll peacefully, sit, and enjoy the park's tranquility while observing the vegetation.
