Conical hills, tiny tarsiers, coral reefs and white-sand beaches: Bohol captures the essence of the Philippines on a single island.

Less than an hour's flight from Manila and a short ferry ride from Cebu, you'll find yourself in Bohol, in the Visayas province. It ranks among the Philippines' most sought-after destinations. The island impresses with its spectacular landscapes, pristine white-sand beaches, world-class hotels and abundant unspoiled nature. Relaxation, discovery and adventure are guaranteed.

Getting to Know Bohol

It's the main island of its eponymous province, which comprises 75 smaller islands. It sits southeast of Cebu and southwest of Leyte, in the central Visayas. Oval in shape, it's the tenth largest in the Philippine archipelago.

The island is vast, encompassing over forty towns and more than a million inhabitants.

Its landscapes are remarkably varied. You'll find rivers, mountains, forests and caves to explore, as well as idyllic beaches, particularly at Anda in the east. After visiting the rice paddies of the north, Palawan or Coron, it often serves as a launching point for discovering other Visayas islands like Siquijor, Camiguin, Pamilacan, Balicasag or Cabilao.

It offers a genuine tropical natural spectacle. Its coastline is lined with tranquil coves and white-sand beaches. Highly prized by diving and snorkeling enthusiasts, it also offers numerous excursions to observe dolphins and whales.

What to Do?

Observe Tarsiers at Corella

Head to the tarsier sanctuary in Corella. These tiny primates, facing extinction, are extremely rare, and Bohol is the best place to encounter them in their natural habitat.

  • Entrance fee: 150 PHP (approximately £2)
  • Things to respect: don't use flash photography, avoid loud noises and don't touch the animals.

Explore the Interior of Panglao

Discover Panglao's jungle on foot, by scooter or car. Its lush landscapes and small villages offer warm encounters with locals. Take time to greet residents and soak in this welcoming and safe atmosphere.

Take Boat Trips to Nearby Islands

From Bohol, you can easily organize boat excursions to surrounding islands.

  • Balicasag: ideal for diving, bustling with visitors daily.
  • Pamilacan: excellent destination for diving and marine wildlife observation.

Discover the Chocolate Hills

The Chocolate Hills are Bohol's most famous attraction. Over 1,300 hills spread across 52 km². During the dry season, the grass turns brown and their name becomes obvious, though they remain verdant the rest of the year. These domes are made of limestone and their formation remains debated by geologists—some point to coral uplift, others to major geological upheaval.

When to Visit Bohol?

The ideal period to visit Bohol runs from December to April, with January and February offering the best weather. Peak tourist season occurs between late December and early January: the climate is pleasant, but expect larger crowds on beaches and roads. Avoid typhoon season, from May to October, as rains and strong winds are frequent then.

By Ferry

Ferry is the most economical way to get there. Main departures are from Cebu (Cebu City and Talood), Negros (Dumaguete) and Siquijor. From Cebu, numerous boats depart daily, so you can buy your ticket directly at the port (Pier 1) without reservation.

For the fast ferry service from Cebu to Bohol (approximately 2 hours), Oceanjet and SuperCat Ferry operate the route. Slower ferries are also available at slightly lower prices. If you're traveling with large luggage, a 100 PHP surcharge applies. You can also book your ticket in advance through 12Go.

By Air

Bohol's airport, located on Panglao island, has connections to Manila and Cebu. To get the best fares, compare offers from low-cost carriers on a flight comparison site to find the most advantageous prices for your dates.

By Scooter

To explore Bohol at your own pace, rent a scooter. Find a rental shop in town or directly at your accommodation. Don't underestimate distances: the island is large and some journeys, particularly from Panglao, can be lengthy. Expect around 500 PHP per day in tourist areas of Panglao.

By Tricycle or Taxi

For short trips around Panglao, travel by tricycle. For longer distances, opt for a taxi—more comfortable but pricier.

By Public Bus or Jeepney

To save money and take your time, use public buses or jeepneys (vintage American jeeps). They serve major tourist areas like Chocolate Hills, Canapnapan (tarsiers), Panglao island and Anda.

Opt for an Organized Tour

If you prefer not to worry about transportation, join a Bohol excursion. Enjoy a visit to the Chocolate Hills, observe the tarsiers and savor a lunch cruise on the Loboc River.
